For more than 30 years, Attorney David Mejia Colgan has devoted his career to criminal law and to defending people whose freedom, family, and future are on the line. Based in the Bronx with an additional office in Westchester County, he represents clients in courts across New York City and throughout New York State, as well as in federal courts around the country.
After graduating from New York University School of Law in 1998, David began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office. There he worked in the domestic violence and sex crimes bureaus, prosecuted serious felony matters, including homicides, and tried numerous misdemeanor and felony cases. Even before becoming a prosecutor, he gained substantial trial experience as a legal intern in the homicide bureau of the Kings County District Attorney’s Office and in the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Appeals Bureau.
In 2005, David left the District Attorney’s Office to enter private practice, initially joining a criminal defense firm in New York City. He spent several years there handling complex federal and state cases before founding his own practice, the Law Offices of David Mejia Colgan, Esq., where he serves as principal attorney. Since then, he has represented hundreds of clients in criminal investigations, trials, appeals, and post-conviction proceedings in both state and federal courts.
David regularly appears in local, town, city, and county courts throughout the five boroughs and in surrounding counties, including Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Nassau, and Suffolk. He is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, Northern, and Western Districts of New York and has been retained in federal matters in other jurisdictions as well.
Today, David’s practice focuses on criminal defense, family law, and matrimonial matters. He defends people charged with offenses ranging from weapons and narcotics cases to violent crimes and fraud, and he also guides clients through divorce, custody, visitation, and family offense proceedings. In a more limited capacity, he assists clients with certain immigration issues, such as citizenship applications and defending against deportation.
Fluent in Spanish, David works closely with New York’s Spanish-speaking communities and is known for taking the time to ensure his clients fully understand the legal process and their options. His commitment to client service is reflected in his strong Avvo rating and numerous positive reviews from people he has represented.
